Alex “Patchy” Koch Team Captain/Controls Team Lead Home grown in Kitchener-Waterloo, Alex is currently following up his undergrad in Mech Eng at UW with a Master’s relating to hardware vehicle simulations for the EcoCAR challenge. When not working on EcoCAR (which isn’t that often) he’s usually trying to fix his 20 year old car. He has fun doing just about anything - as long as it’s with friends. Alex has left his mark on the garage in more ways than one, including sleeping in pretty much every spot possible (like the spare parts shelf). |

Hung “Boston Crab” Nguyen Tech Team Leader Hung, an ‘08 Mech Eng grad, stayed on for graduate studies researching engine testing. His spare time consisted mostly of rugby, dodgeball, and working on his S14. As one of the members with experience from ChallengeX, Hung brings a practical sense to the team while keeping the new guys in line. |

Gurhari “G” Singh Controls Team Member G is a third year undergrad student in mechanical engineering. One of the longest participating members on the team, G began working with UWAFT in the third year of Challenge X. Gurhari’s experience includes cooling loop flow rates, model based simulation and late night runs to Wendy’s for burgers. When not working on the EcoCar project G enjoys searching for rare records in used CD shops and of course impressing the ladies. He will probably never be allowed to leave the team, because you can’t spell UWAFT without G. |

Dano “the techno viking” Westerbaan Mechanical Team Member Dano is a third year Mechanical Engineering student. Originally hired for his first work term, he developed an interest in sustainable transportation. Upon completion of his work term, Dan continued to assist in Challenge X and has made a commitment to further his involvement in the EcoCAR competition. In his spare time, which isn’t much, Dano prefers to compose music on his acoustic guitar and help set up coffee houses or open mics for the UW engineering society. Other than that Dano is usually frantically attempting to repair the most recent breakdown on his beloved Mazda B-series pick-up. Sometimes Dan gets really bored, at such times Dano will paint spider webs on his truck or spend a year growing a devil’s beard. |

Chris “Chummy Shummy” Shum Controls Team Member Hailing from London, Ontario, Chris is a third year Chemical Engineering undergrad with interests outside the Chem norm. New to the team for EcoCAR, he originally joined up for a co-op term in the garage, where he holds the current UWAFT record for going without sleep while working on EcoCAR (49 hours). Chris deals mainly with the controls side, but will work on anything available and also enjoys meeting/training new members. When not buried in work, he can usually be found at the foosball table in POETS, tinkering with whatever he can get his hands on, or chilling hard in the garage. |

Mike “Crisis” Giannikouris Battery Team Leader Mike, an ‘09 Mech Eng grad, is currently working on his masters with a focus on hybrid and electric vehicles - more specifically on vehicle modeling, plug-in logistics and data acquisition. Mike is one of the newer members on the team and spends a considerable amount of time learning as much as he can about different parts of the vehicle. He spends a little time everywhere from 3D CAD modeling to controls development. When he’s not in the garage he’s usually spending time with his wife or hanging out with friends. It’s best to talk to Mike after he’s had his first coffee of the day - otherwise you may be a little lost. |

Carl “The Machine” Chan Suspension and Chassis Specialist As a member of UW’s MechEng class of 2009, Carl is currently pursuing his Masters doing fuel cell research, conducting experimental work on fuel cell components. With an underlying interest in alternative energy forms, he first gained experience with UWAFT during his fourth year of undergrad by doing his design project with UWAFT, for which he did some design and modeling work. He stayed on with UWAFT thereafter, and now likes to focus on the suspension system and structural components of the car, areas to which he can contribute one of his main strengths: 3D modelling. When Carl is not working on UWAFT-related activities, he can usually be found in the gym or occupied with sports. He has also begun dabbling in the art of fixing and building up bicycles from scratch. Carl is also the undefeated arm wrestling champ around the Garage - among those team members that have challenged him. |
| Tim “Word Master” Pasche Battery Team Specialist Tim graduated from Chemical Engineering at Waterloo in 2009, and is currently doing his MASc in ChE with a focus on battery technologies. Even though he is a newcomer to UWAFT, he is no stranger to green technology. Tim’s 4th year design project involved the design of a student life center that utilizes hydrogen and renewable sources to meet its energy needs. He and the rest of the Waterloo team won first place in the 2009 NHA Hydrogen Student Design Contest. As a member of UWAFT, Tim is focusing on the battery pack, specifically thermal management. In his spare time, Tim enjoys playing pool and reading. |
